A Note About The Orioles vs. Mariners Monday Game (From The Orioles...)

Stunned; Washington Downs Baltimore, 3-2, With A 12th Inning Walk-Off Two-Run Homer
In the game of baseball, a difference between winning and losing is determined sometimes by an inch or the judgment of an umpire.That theory could be applied to Sunday's rubber match against the Baltimore Orioles on a hot, sunny day at Nationals Park.
With two outs in the bottom of the twelfth inning, and Baltimore ahead 2-1, thanks to a valiant comeback in the top the frame, the Washington Nationals were seemingly on their way to a second straight loss, and dropping the Battle of the Beltway series against the Orioles.
Baltimo! re closer George Sherrill had to only throw a strike to end the game; however, he walked Dmitri Young on a very close pitch that could have called in their favor. A pitch that might have been called a strike, if it was only a fraction of an inch closer within the zone perhaps may have set up the dramatic moment to finish off a strong weekend.
Ronnie Belliard, the next batter, had his shot against Baltimore's unflappable closer and was behind in the count, 0-2. The third pitch in the sequence to Belliard looked to be close in the strike zone and could have ended the game; however, he would lay off the pitch and it was called for a ball by the home plate umpire.
On the next pitch, Belliard took Sherrill's slider that missed its spot and deposited it over the field fence at Nationals Park.
When all was said and done, he rounded the bases like a little kid; thus, upon reaching to home plate, Belliard got a hero's welcome as he was awash in a sea! of red with his teammates giving him high fives and much dese! rved con gratulations.
His two-run homer stunned not only the Orioles, but perhaps the 39,824 in attendance – the largest crowd in the stadium's three month history.
Washington fans, who jockeyed with those that ventured down from Baltimore all weekend in the stands, got a well deserved and hard fought win as they beat the Orioles, 3-2.
Before the dramatic finale of Sunday's game, Baltimore had gone ahead in the top of the twelfth inning to break a deadlocked 1-1 tie. Washington reliever Luis Ayala started off the inning, and then gave up two consecutive singles with two outs to Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff; thus, moments later, Ayala was replaced with Joel Hanrahan.
With men on both first and second, Adam Jones singled off Hanrahan and plated Markakis and took the lead, 2-1. Guillermo Quiroz would fly out to end the frame, but Baltimore had valiantly come back after being stymied by Washington all day.
After keeping the Orioles! off the board for six frames, Luke Scott took Washington's Jason Bergmann deep to right field and hit his 14th homer in seventh - a solo shot - to tie the game, 1-1.
Meanwhile, Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie, went seven strong innings, gave up an earned run, while striking out three and walking four. He pitched well enough to as well earn a win, but a lack of run support – finished the day with a 3.50 ERA and only a 4-7 record to show for it.
And yes, the Orioles are shockingly only 1-12 on Sundays!!!

After seeing this, do YOU really think he wanted to go anywhere else but New York? He completely used every other team as bait to get a deal, and he'd rather be a piece of with a team - Boston or New York, rather than a focal point of a lineup - everyone else. He may have wanted to be a Yankee, and is saying the right things -- almost too perfectly -- but, he wants to win and the paycheck is definitely worthwhile
I also think it's nice he listened to his wife, and she helped him come to a decision. Again, this does not make it any easier to stomach that he bypassed everyone else for a chance to wear pinstripes.

Guthrie Struggling, Pull Him from the WBC
Much has been made of the World Baseball Classic -- positives and negatives -- and the Baltimore Orioles currently have four players in the huge event (Brian Roberts, Jeremy Guthrie, Cesar and Melvin Mora). While the team has all four players in the semi-finals out at Dodger Stadium, the one who I have the most concern about is Jeremy Guthrie.
If you have been out there live or have seen it on the small screen, it's needless to say that Jeremy Guthrie has not looked good at all, and the Orioles -- for very good reason -- want him back in camp.
I know one of the complaints of the World Baseball Classic is that players have not had ample time to prepare for the games, much less go full force in competitive fashion; therefore, there have been injuries and in Guthrie's case he's been plain bad. Guthrie is not hurt, but obviously, he's not ready for the season and should probably be back with the team in order to work with our ace.>>> Read More
Mets Take First Game of Three from the Orioles, 6-4
Baltimore and New York were scoreless until the 4th inning; however, then everything started to go wrong with the Birds. With a runner on first and no outs, Brian Roberts had a ball hit by Carlos Beltran to him tailor made for a double play, but booted it.
For Jeremy Guthrie – who started the game for Baltimore – he'd sadly pay for Roberts' untimely error. The Mets would use four singles and a sacrifice fly to plate in four runners.
The Orioles would cut the New Yorkers' lead in half, 4-2 in the sixth inning, as ! Mets' starter Mike Pelfrey – who was cruising – would give a two-run homer to Nick Markakis. The Orioles seemed prime to start a rally, but a double play and a Nolan Reimold lineout to left saved the Mets from any more damage.
New York scored twice in the seventh inning as Baltimore rioles once again got into trouble – this time allowing them to load up the bases. With one out in the seventh, Guthrie was yanked after allowing a single to Luis Castillo, and Alberto Castillo allowed back to back singles to Alex Cora and Fernando Martinez to load the bases.

The Cards' Chris Carpenter and the Jays' Aaron Hill are MLB Comeback Players of the Year...
Major League Baseball gave out some hardware today, and the 'Comeback Players' of the Year were named. A special congratulations to the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter -- who pretty much missed two years and just flat out dominated on the mound in the National League -- and the Jays' Aaron Hill, who seemingly came out of nowhere to rake at the plate in 2009.

Columbus Make Playoffs For 1st Time In Their History
Well, the Blue Jackets needed a point last night to guarantee themselves a spot in this year's NHL playoffs. How fitting it was that captain Rick Nash got the goal that tied Chicago and sent the game to OT. The Blue Jackets went on to win in the shootout, but it was Nash's game tying goal that clinched the needed point to get in the playoffs. Congratulations to the Blue Jackets and their fans - it took them a while but they will finally get a taste of the playoffs!
The fans sure are happy over at Light the Lamp, as they should be!
The Cannon has a game recap and a video tribute to Blue Jackets owner John McConnell, a fan favorite, who past away last year and unfortunately didn't get to see his franchise make the playoffs.

The annual NHL Awards ceremony takes place tonight in Las Vegas and will be televised on Versus (in the U.S.) and CBC (in Canada) starting at 7:30pm ET.

Rangers Don't Sign Zherdev
According to Steve Zipay of Blue Notes the Rangers have walked away from Nik Zherdev, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Update - Official Team Release:
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has exercised its right to walk away from the arbitrator's award to Nikolai Zherdev, thereby allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.
"With the additions we've been able to make this summer, we feel we've been able to add scoring and offense from the wing position," stated Sather. "Following the arbitration process and subsequent award given, we feel it is in our best interest to walk away and continue to explore all available options to improve our roster."
Dandenault Possibly Rangers 7th Defenseman
Mathieu Dandenault is heading to Hartford (Rangers AHL affiliate) for a professional tryout. Dandenault has spent his entire NHL career playing for the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. Montreal didn't re-sign him this summer when he became a UFA.
According to Blue Notes:
Word is that the 33-year-old swingman has a tryout deal with Hartford. Dandenault played 13 years with the Red Wings and Canadiens (4-8-12 in 41 games in Montreal last year). He's 6-1, 210 and didn't make the Sharks on a training camp tryout.The Rangers had originally planned to carry seven defenseman but that didn't play out as expected when Alex! ei Semenov decided to head to the KHL instead.
If he plays well enough there, he could be an inexpensive option in New York down the road.

Hampir 20 tahun Giovanni Sartori menjabat sebagai direktur olahraga Chievo Verona. Ada satu kejadian yang paling disesali Sartori, yakni kegagalannya mendaratkan Didier Drogba.
Tujuh tahun silam Drogba masih bukan siapa-siapa. Pemain Pantai Gading yang kini menjadi bintang tersebut masih bermain di klub semenjana Liga Prancis, Guingamp.
Namun bakatnya sudah tercium hingga luar Prancis, tepatnya Italia. Chievo Verona adalah klub yang ketika itu terus memantau bakat Drogba.
Klub berjuluk Keledai Terbang itu selanjutnya mendekati Drogba. "Bila mengingat masa lalu, tahun 2002 kami hampir mendapatkan Drogba. Ia baru saja bergabung di Guingamp, masih jarang mendapatkan kesempatan bermain," demikian Sartori seperti dilansir dari Football-Italia.
"Saya melihat penampilannya dan segera paham seperti apa tipikal permainannya."
Namun faktanya, Drogba tak pernah berseragam I Mussi Volanti. Apa yang membuat tim berseragam utama kuning itu gagal merekrut Drogba? "Harga yang dia minta menurut kami terlalu mahal. Kami butuh waktu lama untuk berpikir keras sebelum akhirnya memutuskan untuk mengubah rencana kami," lanjut Sartori.
Kegagalan ini merupakan hal yang paling disesal! i Sartori yang tahun ini genap seperempat abad mengabdi di Chi! evo.
Meski begitu, Sartori juga memiliki beberapa hal yang bisa dibanggakan. "Pemain-pemain yang dulu pernah di klub ini seperti Nicola Legrottaglie, Simone Barone, Andra Barzagli, dan Simone Perotta kini telah menjadi pemain tim nasional Italia. Ini merupakan kepuasan tersendiri bagi saya," ujar pria yang menjabat sebagai direktur olahraga Chievo sejak tahun 1992 itu.
"Bagi saya, 25 tahun merupakan sebuah keabadian. Ibaratnya, ini merupakan pernikahan jilid dua bagi saya," tuntasnya.

Agent Confirms Interest

Stewart Downing's agent, Ian Elliot, has confirmed that he is aware of the interest show from Tottenham Hotspur in the highly-rated left winger.
Elliot told a local newspaper: "I have heard the rumors about Tottenham. But, to be honest, I don't think Tottenham would be the only club interested in Stewart Downing if he became available. I would not be surprised if Tottenham were looking to bring him in."
Elliot went on to say: "My client is happy at Middlesbrough, providing that his new contract reflects what he deserves for the progress he has made over the past twelve months.
"He doesn't want to leave Boro. As well as his call-ups for England, he has also progressed massively at club level in the past year or so."
Could Downing be on his way? I cannot see Boro parting with their most promising young player at this point in his career unless Spurs were to table an! astonishing offer.
With the Arnesen saga now in full-flow, any signings will be put on the backburner until it has been sorted out.
Why We Need To Move

Many Spurs fans are starting to believe that we are not that far behind our neighbors and deadly rivals Arsenal.
They may be right....for now.
We have never played in the Champions League and have not sampled any type of European competition since 1999, but our famous club is still in the top 20 World's Richest Football Club's List.
We have been adding players like Davids, Routledge, Mido, Defoe, Robinson,! etc to our squad, while Arsenal have been fighting to keep some of their stars. Ashley Cole recently signed a new contract, but I wonder how long he'll remain at the club. Vieira, the torn that has dug into us for the past 8 years has also jumped ship. They also failed in attracting top players.
Some of you may be wondering why this article is called "Why We Need To Move"? It's obvious really. Here are some facts:
White Hart Lane Stadium Capacity: Just over 36,000.
Turnover from season tickets: £13.5 million per season (taken from 23,000 seats allocated to season tickets).
Arsenal's Emirates Stadium Capacity: 60,000
Expected turnover from season ticket sales: £30 million (taken from 45,000 seats allocated to season tickets).
While they may! not hav e the funds to compete with us now, they will overhaul us in the next 3 - 5 years.
Now, imagine us having a ground that housed 60,000 seats. We could also have 45,000 seats allocated to season tickets. The turnover from those season tickets would generate approx £30 million. That is an increase of already £16.5 million. That alone could buy us a world class player.
We would then also have an allocation of approx 15,000 seats to fill, which, I am sure, wouldn't be a problem at all.
The stadium expansion needs to be addressed within the next 3 years or there could be a problem as other clubs will soon be out-bidding us.
I am all for us moving from the Lane. It hates me to say that. But most of us that post on THBN have been to the ground. Those! who have been, know that it would be impossible to expand the stadium by more than 10,000 seats, and even that's pushing it.
We have been told that Levy is due to have a meeting with the council in December. Let's hope that something comes of it.
We cannot expand White Hart Lane at the moment due to the transport infrastructure not being in place.

Midfielder set for surgery
Celtic's dynamo midfielder (although not sure if he would be a dynamo in the Prem), Scott Brown, is set for ankle surgery.
A few sites and ITK's have said that he's a dead cert signing. Well, I've never seen the lad play and so can't comment whether he would be any good for us or not, but his recent injury certainly rules him out of the Wembley Cup and a possible transfer down south.

SAUMEL E IL TORINO VA
Per il primo quarto d'ora la partita regala ben poche emozioni, con le due squadre fin troppo attente a non prenderle più che a darle. Al 16', però, l'Olimpico si ammutolisce quando Miccoli parte palla al piede dalla trequarti e scarica una sassata che va a centrare la traversa. Il pallone torna in campo, ma Cavani, tra due difensori, non riesce a spingere in rete. Giusto il tempo di rivedere il replay, che arriva immediata la risposta del Torino: Diana crossa al centro e Dzemaili ci mette il piede, ma coglie il palo esterno. Nel finale, però, ecco i due episodi decisivi. Prima Nocerino si fa espellere per una gomitata inutile a Dzemaili, quindi arriva il rasoterra di Saumel, che fulmina Fontana con un gran tiro al volo da fuori area.

Preferisco parlare di ciò che è andato bene. A parte Borriello e Bonera (e Kakà negli ultimi 2 giorni per un affaticamento muscolare, ma domani giocherà, ndr), finalmente per la prima vola nella stagione ho potuto lavorare con tutto il gruppo. L'ambiente è buono, abbiamo provato cose nuove, i ragazzi si sono apllicati, come l'anno scorso questo è un pieno che ci consentirà di correre al meglio nella seconda parte della stagione. Vi anticipo che Beckham giocherà, visto che so esserci molta curiosità intorno a lui.
Beckham non dovrebbe partire dall'inizio, la Roma è vicina e questo sarà già un test significativo in vista di una partita così delicata. Una partita da vincere.
E' così. Contro l'Amburgo, è vero, sarà una partita vera, ormai ogni partita è vera perché tutti vogliono vincere sempre e comunque. Il distacco dall'Inter è colmabile?

A cominciare dall'assenza prolungata di Nesta, i gravi problemi in difesa hanno condizionato il nostro rendimento soprattutto in trasferta. Ora rientreremo in Italia, se Dio vuole, con il reparto arretrato al completo.
I vostri giocatori un po' più anziani stanno aiutando l'inserimento dei più giovani?
Preferisco parlare di esperienza più che di vecchiaia. Qui il più maturo è Paolo Maldini e costituisce un grande esempio per tutti, professionale e comportamentale.
Shevchenko è stato utilizzato pochissimo in questi mesi, avrà più chance ! nei prossimi?
Posso dire che si tratta senz'altro del giocatore che ha tratto il miglior giovamento dal lavoro di questi giorni a Dubai. E' tornato da noi dopo 2 anni di inattività, praticamente, quindi ha dovuto lavorare molto. Lo ha fatto e lo sta facendo. E' quello che ha fatto più progressi da luglio, sarà molto utile da qui a maggio.
L'allenatore dell'Amburgo dal canto suo sintetizza: "Siamo la squadra con l'età media più bassa in Bundesliga, il che non ci ha impedito di essere a ridosso di Hoffenheim e Bayern e di essere in corsa con ambizione in Coppa Uefa. Il Milan metterà in campo classe ed esperienza, noi entusiasmo e freschezza. Far giocare insieme tanti campioni è impossibile? No, se c'è la volontà di tutti. La Juve si sarebbe rifatta viva per Huntelaar. Secondo quanto riportato da Tuttomercatoweb Alessio Secco, vista la situazione dell'attaccante che ha chiesto di andare via dal Real Madrid, avrebbe riallacciato i contatti.
SCAMBIO BENTLEY-QUARESMA A GIUGNO
La lezione subita dal calcio di Sua Maestà avrebbe spinto José Mourinho a pescare dalla Premier League. Dall'Inghilterra, infatti, fanno sapere che l'allenatore interista vorrebbe portare a Milano il centrocampista di fascia del Tottenham, David Bentley. La società nerazzurra avrebbe proposto per la prossima stagione uno scambio con il portoghese Ricardo Quaresma, arrivato al Chelsea in prestito dall'Inter durante il mercato di gennaio.
Bentley, 24 anni, conta diverse presenze nell'Under 21 inglese: in particolare si è messo in! evidenza segnando una splendida punizione duranta la sfida con l'Italia giocata in occasione della riapertura dello stadio di Wembley nel marzo 2007.
Il giocatore, però, sta trovando poco spazio nel Tottenham, lasciato ai margini da Redknapp, e avrebbe voluto trasferirsi già a gennaio. L'Inter, invece, alla fine decise di liberarsi di Quaresma senza sostituirlo immediatamente.
L'obiettivo di Mourinho, infatti, era Jermaine Jenas, ritenuto tuttavia incedibile dagli Spurs, che avevano sì offerto Bentley per avere il portoghese, ma con la richiesta di un conguaglio ritenuto esagerato per solo metà stagione.
Questa richiesta stoppò ogni possibile trattativa. Adesso le parti si sarebbero riavvicinate e l'operazione potrebbe finalmente andare in porto.
ZURIGO - MILAN, La situazione
La squadra rossonera intensifica gli allenamenti per affrontare al meglio la gara di Coppa Uefa di domani sera che vedrà la squadra di Carlo Ancelotti impegnata nella trasferta di Zurigo. Certo il Milan parte avvantaggiato dato il risultato dell'andata (3-1), ma ciò non comprometterà la prestazione dei ragazzi, che affronteranno il match con molta determinazione.
